A notorious pirate ship from Val, captained by a man named Zachariah.
Details
Vargus served as the Black Wake’s surgeon, spending his whole life aboard — crews on Val’s ships tend to be generational, and Vargus had never served on any other vessel (e00 01:33). A crewmate named One-Arm Pete, who lost both legs and his other arm, once saved Vargus’s life in a cannon exchange between ships; Vargus has never made good on his promise to restore Pete’s lost limbs (e00 01:18).
The Black Wake, battle-torn and barnacle-covered, came halfway out of a crackling green portal into a cavern, ocean water pouring through a gash in its side, and impaled and killed a giant goblin (e01 00:36, e01 00:37). Its crew, as hard and battle-torn as the ship, fought the goblins swarming its deck with cutlasses (e01 00:37, e01 00:38). A fully skeletal figure was commanding people around the deck; this is the captain, Zachariah (e01 00:38, e01 00:39). A long, thick, pale tentacle wrapped around the ship and pulled it back into the portal, and the goblins on deck turned to blood as they touched it (e01 00:40, e01 00:41).
Vargus was on the deck; he says the Black Wake left him behind (e01 00:39, e01 00:45). He describes its crew as a notorious gang of pirates who aren’t allowed around most things because they tend to steal them; as a crew member he isn’t legally allowed to set foot on any land or flotilla, and is wanted for execution in most seas (e02 00:43, e02 00:43, e02 00:44, e02 00:44). Rue calls its skeletal captain an abomination who should be in the ground (e02 00:44). Vargus says that when the ship was pulled back he was picking up a crewmate named Johnny, and went backwards through Johnny onto the deck before the ship retreated and he fell off (e04 00:51, e04 00:52, e04 00:52). Another crewmate, Bonnie Sue, swung on a rope into the front of a ship and couldn’t be put back together (e04 00:54, e04 00:54). Everyone on the ship, Vargus says, is free, and does everything they want when they want; you are born on the ship, or brought onto it, and die on it (e04 00:59, e04 00:59). See Fissures for the portal.
