The one presiding god of Val, a Poseidon-esque deity.
Details
Our Lady of the Deep is depicted, in some tellings, as a great mermaid — an Ursula-style figure with a giant octopus lower half and a beautiful woman’s upper half; many people have never actually seen her (e00 01:34). She has a real physical effect on the world: her clerics can change the weather in their favour, or turn the creatures of the sea against their enemies, if they hold her favour (e00 01:34).
Val’s pirate bands are largely devout, having spent most of their lives at sea, at her mercy (e00 01:34). Her culture holds that voluntarily entering the ocean, outside of falling in by accident, is a form of blasphemy — an offering only she has the right to accept or reject (e00 01:35). Vargus reveres her mostly out of the pervasive superstition of shipboard life, while otherwise deferring to whoever holds the most immediate power over him (e00 01:36). He says she will take you just for sitting, so you have to keep running; all the great things in adventure, life, and riches come from her, but she will murder you for funsies and not think about it, and takes a lot more than she gives (e04 00:56, e04 00:56, e04 00:56, e04 00:56). A deal with her, Vargus says, always comes out worse for you than for her: you mostly get what you want, at a horrible cost; such deals are signed in contract with the sea, and he already has one (e05 01:09, e05 01:10, e05 01:10).
