An avatar spawned from the collective horror of the realms in response to The Hollowing Plague.
Details
The Hollow King exists because of a latent psionic connection shared by everyone on Ereboros: when enough people believe something, it tends to become true — the GM compared this to Warhammer’s orks or Santa Claus in holiday films (e00 00:26). The Hollow King rose specifically from mass fear of the Hollowing Plague (e00 00:26). He has not appeared in person.
In the e01 recap, the GM says the Hollow King is far away and “just a story, really” (e01 00:04).
Matilda says the Hollow King was born from the Hollowing Plague (e04 00:14, e04 00:14). Mikhail Asimi gives the party “bonus points” if they can take him out, because as far as Mikhail knows he may be “the head of the snake,” and the whole thing could be handled with one blow (e04 01:19, e04 01:19).
A doomsayer in Wriem says the opposite: “The Hollow King is not the disease. Gabriel is the disease. The Hollow King is the fever, and more will rise until the balance is restored” (e05 00:50, e05 00:50). See Gabriel Landaluce.
