Details
The Forgotten Depths is home to demons, devils, and spawns of the Pale — to Edyreans on the surface, nothing good happens down there (e00 00:19). The Guilds have mostly kept it under control, historically, dealing with any cracks, fissures, or incursions of monsters or criminal gangs that emerge (e00 00:23).
The cracks and portals that connect the Forgotten Depths to the surface are covered on Fissures.
Essence crystals are mined from Underwriem, the part of the Forgotten Depths directly beneath Wriem, and from the Forgotten Depths more broadly (e00 01:43). To legally delve into the Forgotten Depths, a person must belong to a guild and pay tax on any loot or essence they collect (e00 02:09).
People do live in the Forgotten Depths and Underwriem, but they are not welcome on the surface (e00 02:11).
Just below the surface, below Wriem, the Depths begin as a dark cavern corridor with faint, occasional bioluminescence and very small essence crystals, worth little and closer to dust (e01 00:15).
Further down, a cavern with a crack of daylight above it has a deep, dark pit at its far end; Caspian calls the pit the actual Forgotten Deep, and says any deeper “we’re somewhere else” (e02 00:26, e02 00:27, e02 00:27). It is illegal to talk about the Forgotten Deep, and only the strongest people from the guilds can go deeper (e02 00:28, e02 00:28).
