The ancient retired adventurer who runs Willy’s Wards in Wriem, and keeps it safe with his magical wards (e04 00:10, e04 00:24, e04 00:24). He gave the party a room, a pot, and his advice before they set out for Holst, and asked them to come back and tell him about their adventures (e04 00:33, e04 00:35, e04 01:25).
Details
Appearance and manner
Willy is an ancient-looking Viking man, human, who must be in his 90s: very large and very tall, moving slowly and very hunched over (e04 00:10, e04 00:10, e04 00:10). He loves telling stories of his adventuring days, and does until interrupted (e04 00:22, e04 00:23). He doesn’t talk to the Queen’s Guard: when they questioned him, he said nothing, his warm smile steeled over, and he steered Wisp away from them — “we don’t talk to Queen’s Guard, son” (e04 00:28, e04 00:28, e04 00:29, e04 00:30). He loves adventuring parties (e04 00:49).
Background
In his day Willy was an accomplished tank-type adventurer with shields and wards; he brought back monsters from the deep, took on the Pale with his shields, and protected his friends from just about everything (e04 00:22, e04 00:23, e04 00:23, e04 00:24). He has a shield with a big claw mark across it (e04 00:23). He has retired to the quiet tavern life, but is still adept at the magical wards he uses to keep Willy’s Wards safe (e04 00:24, e04 00:24); with a wave of his hand he can set three shields rotating around him (e04 00:24, e04 00:25).
He has adventurers sign one of the shields on his walls — “all good adventures start in a tavern” — and has thousands of names up (e04 01:24, e04 01:24). His advice to adventurers is to stop along the way, to help people, who may come back and help you, and because you need money: he’s in “the stop crew” (e04 00:35, e04 00:35, e04 00:35).
