The Queen’s Guard operates above the ordinary law of Edyrea and mostly disregards Vormonde, the god of law, creating political tension between the two (e00 02:12). Where Vormonde’s Arbiters have to weigh and argue a case, the Queen’s Guard can act on their own judgment regardless of who’s actually in the right (e00 02:17).
During the moon goblin attack on Wriem, members of the Guard, in guard outfits, gathered in the streets, and one stood on an overturned cart trying to direct fleeing crowds (e03 00:12, e03 00:16); later the Guard fought the moon goblins in the south of the city (e03 01:33). Mikhail Asimi warns the party to avoid the Guard, who “don’t take kindly to people from other places” (e03 01:40, e03 01:40). According to Mikhail’s profile, only he and the Queen’s Guard know why he was absolved of killing the Prophecy of the Snake’s leader (e03 00:10). Mikhail says Willy isn’t very friendly to the Guard (e03 01:40).
After the attack, a group of the Guard, led by the sergeant who had directed traffic during it, searched Willy’s Wards and then went house to house (e04 00:26, e04 00:26, e04 00:30). They were blunt and rude, with no regard for anyone’s privacy (e04 00:27, e04 00:27, e04 00:30). The sergeant said there were “AEs” on the loose — anti-essence monstrosities that escaped the fissure into the city — and reports that people were shielding or hiding them; they look like mortals, talk and walk like us, are growing stronger and craftier, and it is only a matter of time before they look like us (e04 00:27, e04 00:27, e04 00:27, e04 00:28, e04 00:29, e04 00:29). He asked Orrin, as a Magisterium scribe, to report anything he heard, so the Guard could extract these things (e04 00:28, e04 00:30, e04 00:30). Willy says nothing to them: “we don’t talk to Queen’s Guard” (e04 00:28, e04 00:30).
Matilda says that if the Guard found out about anyone with the Hollowing Plague, they would put them down immediately, and probably kill everyone who knew about it (e04 00:15, e04 00:15). Gilbert, according to Mikhail, is on his way to sell the Guard the identities of the anti-essence beings (e04 01:12, e04 01:12).
The Guard’s barracks is the Watchtower, the only tower in Wriem taller than the queen’s keep (e05 00:08, e05 00:08). On Merchant Row they walk in pairs collecting stall fees, and in the South District a Guard patrol is rarely a good thing (e05 00:09, e05 00:09, e05 00:09). In Trade Alley a Guard cut off a woman’s hand for stealing bread (e05 00:10, e05 00:10, e05 00:11). They dragged a doomsayer preaching against Gabriel Landaluce away from a crowd, clamping an iron mask over his head (e05 00:50, e05 00:51, e05 00:51). Lauren says they’ve been really cracking down lately (e05 00:35).
