The Magisterium

Factionfirst mentioned e00 02:11

An institution that employs scribes and licenses access to historical records, and that sent Orrin to support the Nightforge guild.

Details

In Landaluce‘s Edyrea it is illegal to remember, write about, or record a time before she was queen; viewing historical records requires a special license from the Magisterium, and even then the records may only be discussed in theoretical terms (e00 02:11).

Orrin is a junior scribe with the Magisterium; he usually just copies scrolls, and has held his current position for only a few weeks (e01 00:17, e01 01:47), though he has been with the Magisterium about six years (e04 01:06, e04 01:07). The Magisterium assigned him, in a letter full of legalese, to support the Nightforge guild at a fissure, field-test a specimen composed entirely of anti-essence, and use an anti-essence detection wand (e01 00:07, e01 00:08). The GM describes Orrin as a representative of the Magisterium (e01 00:05). The specimen was locked in a crate that floated behind him; Orrin was given no key or code word (e01 00:05, e01 00:20), and was not told any way to close the portals (e01 01:48). The letter spares him a ceremony because the event budget was reallocated last quarter (e01 00:07).

Orrin’s only friend at the Magisterium is a co-scribe named Josiah, who pressed a jar holding a live cricket into his hand as Magisterium representatives sent him off on his first solo mission, telling him to watch his back (e01 01:48, e01 01:49). Orrin has voiced the suspicion that the Magisterium sent him there to be killed (e01 00:08, e01 01:50). He later tells the others that it doesn’t typically send people like him on such missions, and that it may be testing whether he is a weapon (e02 00:58, e02 01:00). He warns the three isekai’d arrivals that the Magisterium will probably kill them as deviants once they reach the surface, and that it probably has hundreds of wands like his (e02 00:48, e02 00:49). In e04 – A Spot to Rest our Pot he says it kept him in a basement transcribing things for those six years, that it is definitely trying to kill him, and that it sent him on a task he should not have been able to accomplish (e04 01:07, e04 01:07, e04 01:07); he keeps drafting reports for it, so it won’t send someone looking for him (e04 01:05). The Queen’s Guard expects a Magisterium scribe to have devices that tell what is real and what isn’t (e04 00:28, e04 00:28, e04 00:28).
