A small wand with a pulsing pink orb, issued to Orrin by the Magisterium, that glowed brighter the closer something made of anti-essence was; it was disintegrated in an explosion in Wriem (e03 01:04).
Details
Issue
The Magisterium’s letter to Orrin says he has been issued “one standard anti-essence detection wand, Magisterium approved” to assist him at the fissure (e01 00:08). The letter warns that anti-essence creatures can be difficult to detect, unpredictable in temperament, or unenthusiastic about being detected, and asks that if the wand fails to register a threat that is, by any conventional definition, currently attempting to kill him, he note it in his after-action report under “known limitations” (e01 00:08). Orrin says the Magisterium wants it back, and that he will bring it back (e01 00:08).
Appearance and behavior
The wand is very small and thin, with a giant pulsing pink orb at the end (e01 00:14). It goes bright pink when pointed at the crate that holds Wisp; pointed anywhere else it does not really light up, except very faintly toward the fissure (e01 00:14). The GM says it gets brighter the closer anti-essence things are (e01 00:14).
In the fissure
Among the moon goblins’ bodies, Orrin holds up the wand and points it around at the group and the bodies, and says he doesn’t think it will help much; the GM says it is “all pink all the time” and that he is surrounded by things made of anti-essence (e01 01:53).
After the fight, the wand is glowing toward the giant moon goblin (e01 02:00). Orrin asks to check it without the Nightforge guild members seeing (e01 02:00). It glows pink for Wisp, Vargus, Rue, and the giant moon goblin, and does nothing for the Nightforge guild or for Orrin; the GM says Orrin knows why (e01 02:00, e01 02:01).
After the fall
Caspian saw Orrin pointing the wand around; Orrin shows the others that it doesn’t glow for him but glows bright pink toward Wisp, Vargus, and Rue (e02 00:31, e02 00:31). Vargus takes it and points it at Gilbert, the twins, and Caspian; it glows for none of them, and Orrin tells them it has been acting up (e02 00:32, e02 00:32, e02 00:33). Gilbert tries to snatch it from Vargus and fails (e02 00:33). Orrin says the Magisterium probably has hundreds of them (e02 00:49).
Destroyed
When the essence-crystal-packed arcanery in Wriem exploded, Orrin’s orb and the wand were both disintegrated (e03 01:00, e03 01:04). See e03 – Kaiju City Battle: First Responders.
