Details
According to the going theory, the world was once overrun with kaiju, demons, devils, and monsters, and people lived underground in hiding. The Transcendents were given immense power, cleared the surface, built a tower to the heavens, and then went to Elysium and conquered it, killing the primordial angel- and seraphim-like beings who lived there (e00 01:59:53).
The Transcendents are powerful — roughly on the level of a 20th-level D&D character — but not omnipotent or invulnerable; even the strongest could be killed by a group of about ten 20th-level characters if enough turned against them (e00 02:00:56).
Ascension
Any mortal can, in theory, become a Transcendent by climbing the tower built by Rimthurghast and Rhea, two of the Nine Founders — the tower still stands (e00 02:01:57). In practice, the Transcendents publicly claim to hope for new ascensions but privately do everything they can to prevent anyone from climbing it (e00 02:01:57). Saint Sienna, the bard who put Sarvothemisues to sleep, is a rare example of someone brought up to Elysium despite not being born a pure-blooded Transcendent (e00 02:03:03).
The Nine Founders
The Nine Founders are the original Transcendents who led humanity in retaking the surface. Named so far:
- Rimthurghast — god of masons and architects; built the tower to Elysium (e00 02:03:03).
- Rhea — goddess of magic, the first wizard; twin of Rimthurghast and his opposite, favouring riddles, games, and non-Euclidean spaces (e00 02:04:07).
- Galgleroten — god of fertility and copulation; father of the metamortal bloodline (e00 02:04:07).
- Landaluce — the God-Queen; the only pure-blooded Transcendent who resides physically on Edyrea (e00 02:07:12).
- Vormonde — god of law, oath, and vow (e00 02:15:30).
